1989 Amnesia

Analog 120mm B&W film

Censored by the Chinese Communist Party, the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests have been erased from my generation, and left scars in the hearts of many that participated in the event as students during that time.

After learning about the significance of the event in modern Chinese history, I feel the need to find the truth behind it as an outsider of the history (since I was born four years after the protests, and millennials in China have no knowledge of it). I started investigating all the protests happening in the country which lasted for about two months, leading to the so-called "massacre" on June 4th, 1989, both through Western media and some recounts in English from Chinese immigrants that are currently outside of China, as the country itself remains silent on the issue and has wiped out almost all information about it.

In addition to research, I have also interviewed some close relatives that joined protests as students in 1989, who are willing, even eager to tell the stories as those memories have been buried and suppressed for decades.

I'm currently still conducting interviews and doing more research to turn all the products into a photography series "1989 Amnesia", not only to remember the importance of my history, but also to reflect on how it is still relevant in today's global political environment.
